Why is it important to have a .GP domain name?
A .GP domain name allows you to assert your Guadeloupean identity and strengthen your connection with the local community. It inspires confidence in customers searching for a business, association, or service based in Guadeloupe.
Does a .GP domain name improve search engine ranking?
A .GP domain name can help search engines understand that your site is primarily aimed at the Guadeloupean public. It can therefore boost your visibility in local searches, especially when users are looking for a product, business, or service in Guadeloupe. Search engine optimization (SEO) also depends on the quality of the site, its content, its speed, and its popularity.
What happens after a .GP domain name expires?
After its expiration, the domain name benefits from a 30-day grace period. During this time, the owner can renew it directly from their management area on extension.gp. After this 30-day period, the domain name becomes available again. The former owner will then have to submit a new registration request, with no guarantee of being able to recover it, as it may also be registered by another person or company.
Am I reserving a .GP domain name corresponding to an existing brand?
The technical availability of a domain name does not automatically grant you the right to register or use it. Before registering, verify that the chosen name does not reproduce a trademark, trade name, or company name belonging to a third party. You can, in particular, conduct a prior art search in the INPI database.
What are the risks if I reserve the name of a brand belonging to a third party?
The trademark owner can contest your registration and initiate proceedings to request the deletion, blocking, or transfer of the domain name. Depending on the circumstances and the domain's use, they may also claim damages or file a trademark infringement lawsuit. The risk is particularly high if the domain is registered to capitalize on a brand's reputation, divert its customers, create confusion, or attempt to resell it to its owner. This practice can be considered cybersquatting. Recovery or deletion procedures exist in cases of infringement of a third party's rights. Information from Afnic on disputes is available.
Who is responsible for the reserved domain name?
The registrant is solely responsible for the domain name they choose to register and its use. extension.gp provides the registration service, but it is the client's responsibility to verify that the requested name does not infringe on the rights of any third party. If in doubt, it is recommended to consult a legal professional specializing in intellectual property before proceeding with the registration.
How to prevent a reservation from being considered cybersquatting?
To limit risks, the domain name must correspond to a real and legitimate project. Before registering it, it is recommended to comply with the following conditions: • Do not reproduce or imitate an existing trademark without the owner's permission. • Do not reserve the name of a company, public figure, or institution in order to profit from their reputation. • Do not attempt to deceive internet users or create confusion with an existing business. • Do not use the domain to divert customers, display misleading advertising, or harm a third party. • Do not reserve the domain primarily to resell it to the trademark owner at an excessive price. • Be able to demonstrate a legitimate interest, such as your own name, your company, your brand, a real project, or a generic term related to your business. • Keep documents that prove your project and the date of its creation. Simply registering a domain name without immediately using it does not automatically constitute cybersquatting. However, the absence of a genuine project, combined with trademark infringement and an attempt to resell it, can be an indication of bad faith. Afnic defines cybersquatting as the registration of a domain name corresponding to a trademark or company in order to resell it, profit from its reputation, or harm it. None of these precautions alone guarantees the absence of litigation. If in doubt, it is recommended to seek the advice of an intellectual property professional.
